A glorious bank holiday weekend saw the spring Unaffiliated Three Day Event for individuals and teams at MK Event Centre in Buckinghamshire. Rain on Friday did nothing to dampen spirits or quell the competition. Riders travel from all corners of the UK for this popular event.
Styled on the greats of Badminton & Burghley this event still offers Roads & Tracks and Steeplechase phases giving a rare opportunity to ride these hugely educational aspects of eventing. With course starting at 2’3’’ riders of all abilities are able to compete.
Most riders camp on site making a weekend of it for all the family even the dogs come too. The recent addition of the TEAM event to the competition adds a new dimension. No longer are you just riding for your own result. This year also saw the introduction of ROR winners.
Class 0 was won by the much coveted and positively cute, delightful, diminutive and obviously highly talented Lemon Twist ably ridden by 11 year old Summer Nicholls. Lemon Twist at 12.2hh was one of the smallest combinations but it did not stop her hogging the in the limelight. After a great dressage test of 30 penalties only 0.8 time penalties on thee cross country blighted an otherwise perfect three days. Rider and pony went home with handfuls of rosettes and rugs and huge grins to tell all their pony club friends what a great weekend they had had.
Class 1 was won in ecstatic style by South African born Jennifer Olivier a veterinary nurse based in Olney. Jennifer and her 17.2hh ride, Rocco have only just started eventing having built up a trusting relationship together. Rocco will be guest of honour at Jennifer and her fiancé wedding in July at Warwick Castle.
Class 2 was taken by Elise Howard from Norfolk on a fabulous dressage score of 25.5 to which only 1.2 time penalties were added. A few tense moments were had in the show-jumping when her lovely but large chestnut gelding ‘Flagheath’ rattled the odd pole but fate was on her side and she held pole position. Elise won her class last year on her previous horse and brought Flagheath ‘just for the experience’. Only imported from Ireland just before Christmas this full Irish Draught Hunter is now a fully converted and proven event. Well done.
Class 3 a BE100 + standard class was won by Laura Massey and Belavista who travelled with their family from Kidderminster. Regulars at the three day event this event was third time lucky for Bellavista a 17hh gentle giant bay mare. This combination regularly compete in their local area and work hard for every event. This showed with a 28 dressage and foot perfect event from then on. Well done.
The Spillers Sponsored Team Event now in its second year is always well contested. The winning team win Gold Medals and Rugs kindly provided by Spillers Horse Feeds. This year was Toad ( the horse ) and The Ginger Nuts (his three chestnut friends) ridden by Lucie White, Gemma Cox, Jo Cross and Sarah Watkins. On a total 3 day score of 105 penalties they were clear winners ahead of Kimbolton School in Silver Medal and The Junior GB Wannabies in Bronze.
A delighted and almost lost for words Sarah Ashley won the ROR class on her thoroughbred Hope in Running. It was a close run contest with runner up Lucie White and Sea Sprite also on no penalties forcing the tie break to go back to the closest to optimum time on the xc. A beaming Sarah said ‘ all the work was worth it – I even got an ‘8’ from the dressage judge!’
If you are interested in competing in a Three Day Event the next date is 19-22 September 2013. Schedule and details are on the website www.mkec.co.uk. It is open to all levels of riders with classes at 2’3’’ 2’6’’/2’9’’ 2’9’’/3’ and 3’3’’. Horses need to be fit enough for the roads and tracks and riders should have some competition experience to get the most out of the event.
