Exceptionally competitive combinations were out in force at the culmination of this year’s Baileys Horse Feeds Jumping and Style (JAS) series at the Championships at Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire (22nd February).
Each of the winners took home generous prizes from Baileys including feed vouchers, rugs and sashes plus a place on a cross country training clinic with Baileys sponsored rider Blyth Tait.
In addition to the array of prizes from Baileys, the winners will also have their season boosted by £500 worth of vouchers to use on BE Accredited Training.
BE90 JAS Championship
Melton Mowbray’s Heidi Coy and her own skewbald 14h0 gelding, Optimist II (by Ontario), took the BE90 JAS crown over the weekend, following up two wins at JAS qualifiers at Solihull and Arena UK. Heidi who is 14 years old commented: “I’ve had him since last April and we started out doing Pony Club Eventing. We joined BE with him in September and have since completely caught the Eventing bug!
“JAS was a great way for us to get to know each other better and to get our eye in for the season ahead; it’s been a real confidence boost. The hope now is to take part in the under 18 programme and my real dream is to qualify for the Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships.
“I’m going to use my BE training vouchers with Caroline Moore and I’ve already bought lots of new Baileys horse feed. The most exciting part of the day was winning my beautiful rug and sash and getting to do a lap of honour, it made the day feel so special.”
BE100 Championship
Professional eventer Kylie Roddy won the BE100 JAS Championships with Ellen Kern’s bay gelding Guzzi who is by Grafenstolz out of Lambretta (Vimalero XX). The 31 year old rider from Stokenchurch (Buckinghamshire) added the Championship accolade to a series of top ten results notched up at this year’s JAS qualifiers, including two wins.
Kylie commented on the series: “It is a really good competition to know where you are at in terms of preparation with your horse whatever their level. I find it really tests horses and rider in terms of riding lines and accuracy and is a great pre-season eye-opener.”
Of the six year old gelding Kylie added: “This result is totally a testament to him really, I have only had him three weeks. He is such a girl’s type of horse and made it all feel really easy.
“I am definitely looking forward to the JAS Championships winners’ clinic with Blyth Tait in summer.”
Novice and Open JAS Championship
Another 14 year old rider in the form of Thomas Tulloch took the JAS Novice and Open Championships with his mother Jancis Tulloch’s bay 14h2 gelding, Spirit VI (of unknown breeding).
Oswestry-based Thomas said: “I came here today aiming for a top ten finish, I knew the competition was tough so I didn’t expect to do so well – to win both classes is incredible and to be placed 2nd in the Novice too, well you couldn’t ask for any more. Both ponies jumped very well, you really had to ride your lines accurately but I found the competition both useful from a training perspective and great fun. The feedback from the Coach [Yogi Breisner] was very constructive so I’ve taken away some clear points to work on at home.”
Thomas who also achieved a second place result in the Novice riding Trewithian Bracken added: “The Baileys feed vouchers will be a great help as we already feed our ponies on Baileys, and the training vouchers will allow me to get valuable training from Jonquil Hemming and hopefully spend a few days away with another coach – an opportunity that wouldn’t have been available to me without this prize. The aim for 2014 is to continue with Pony Trials and GB Pony squad selection.”
Baileys Marketing Manager Jane Buchan commented: “It was great to see so many riders at the JAS Championships and to reward our worthy winners. We have really enjoyed interacting with competitors, this year, and hope they all gained valuable experience to take forward to their eventing season.”
