Intricacy and Style at Society of Master Saddlers’ National Competition

Posted on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 by Sasha Melia

THE 2019 Society of Master Saddlers’ National Saddlery Competition will see a classic and innovative President’s Choice class.

Master Saddler Chris Taylor will take up the reins as President at this year’s Annual General Meeting in September and has come up with the concept of entrants designing and making any leather item incorporating traditional hand stitched Box Work techniques. This could be demonstrated on a hunting flask, hard gun case or hat box to name a few.

Said Chris: “As part of my year as President I was given the opportunity to put forward the idea for the theme of The President’s Choice class and wanted to come up with an idea that showcased true craftsmanship.

“I really hope those entering will throw themselves into the theme and wow us with their designs and innovation.”

The class is open to all Society of Master Saddlers’ members and their employees and must be the sole work of the entrant.

The entries will be judged on quality and craftsmanship as well as their innovative design and features.

Once again the class will have an added dimension as it will also be part judged at BETA International in January where all the entries will be on display at The Society of Master Saddlers’ stand.

Entries must be sent to the society office by January 16, 2019. The Society of Master Saddlers National Saddlery Competition takes place at Saddlers’ Hall, London on Monday, February 4.

ALEX PASSED ‘FIT TO RIDE’ BY BRITISH RACING SCHOOL

Posted on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 by Sasha Melia

After a gruelling day of assessment at the British Racing School in Newmarket, Alex Monro was officially declared ‘Fit to ride’ in the Pertemps Champions Willberry Charity Derby race at Epsom on 27 August.

This is the first time that such a race has been run at Epsom and the challenging nature of the course means the amateur riders taking part need to be as fit as professional jockeys.  Hence each of the 12 had to spend a day at the British Racing School to be assessed.

Alex who is director of Mole Energy Switching (www.moleenergy.com) explains: “I was pleased and relieved to get this assessment behind me.  I have been training religiously since March – riding out, running and cycling at least 20 miles per week, as well as visiting the gym twice a week. I am delighted that this major hurdle is now behind me and I can carry on getting myself as fit as possible for the big day”.

Alex is on track to raise his personal goal of £5000 for Hannah’s Willberry the Wonder Pony Charity and The Bob Champion Cancer Trust. His corporate sponsors are Mole Valley Farmers (www.molevalleyfarmers.com) and Mole Energy; Rutherford Estates, (who are currently developing a Proton beam to be used in the fight against cancer); Costguard; Bishop Fleming; and The All England Jumping Course Hickstead.and the correct link for Alex’s Virgin Money page is https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/AlexMonro

His mount for the day is being kindly provided by Karen and Paul George (www.karengeorgeracing.com).

Alex concludes:

“Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far and I hope I can do justice to both charities and raise thousands more.  I will endeavour to keep you all updated on the preparations leading up to the big day via

To date the professional riders for the race include three day eventer Lissa Green, (daughter of Lucinda Green MBE) and her cousin Lara Prior-Palmer, who has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Lissa and Lara will be joined by Alex, Sheikh Fahad Al Thani, showjumper Tim Gredley and Horse and Hound journalist Gemma Redrup plus six other amateur riders from the equine world.
