2014 Review: United Saddlebred Association-UK European Championships, 25th May 2014

Report by organiser, Lynn Jarvis
Judges: Margo Hepner-Hart & Ann Blackaby
The May Festival Horse Show is now the biggest Foreign Breed / World Breed show in the UK and offers a great show case for every breed, not just Saddlebreds. In addition it hosts the USA-UK European Saddlebred Championships, with great prizes on offer for the Purebred In Hand, Partbred In Hand and Ridden Saddlebred Champions. We re-introduced the British Bred class (for purebreds) to encourage breeding of purebreds and have a cash payout of £310 on offer.
The day began with two in hand rings running concurrently – Morgans & Saddlebreds in one and Friesians, Iberians and open Foreign Breeds in the other. Topping the honours in the purebred Saddlebred championships was the stallion Even Worse for Jane Armstrong-Lancaster and the gelding, Spellbound Magical Fate, for Lucy Abbott in the partbred Saddlebred Championship.

Morgan Horse Landside Music Lord took the Supreme In Hand Championship for Tim Northcott from Lancashire
Shortly before 11am all the champions and reserves came together from these two rings to vie for the Supreme In Hand Championships. After much deliberation between the two judges it was the Morgan Horse Landside Music Lord, for Tim Northcott from Lancashire, who took the tri-colour and was bedecked with his colourful garland and presented with his “bag of goodies” and supreme championship rug. Another Morgan Horse took the reserve spot, Monnington Overture, owned by John Blumer. And, what was nice to see, both these horses were veterans – proving that a good horse remains a good horse, even as they progress in years.

Purebred Spanish Horse, Magistrado VII with owner Sarah Jago aboard taking the Walk & Trot Championship
After a short break to allow competitors to tack up, the walk / trot classes commenced. These have proved highly popular in the past, so for 2014 they were expanded and given their own championship. This time it was the turn of the Baroque Horses to show their mettle, with the Purebred Spanish Horse, Magistrado VII with owner Sarah Jago aboard taking the Championship and the empowered Friesian Horse, Tsjebe ‘Fan ‘E ‘Esta Hoeve, who stands at least 17hh with owner Julia Catling taking Reserve, who had travelled from Scotland to support this show.
Next came the whole range of ridden classes – breed specific classes for the Morgan, the Saddlebred, the Friesian, the Paso Fino and the Spanish/Lusitano and the Open Foreign Breed class – some restricted on previous winnings, some on amateur status and some open to all.
The last class was our most colourful – the Heritage/Costume class. With a stunning array of entries, period costumes or traditional for the breed – all had a lot of effort put into their creations. Taking top spot and having travelled from Essex to support the show, was Teri Osborne and her recently imported Friesian stallion, Sander. In fact the top 3 spots went to competitors wearing creations from Teri (Elegant Equine Designs) – if that’s not a commendation for her works of art, then I don’t know what is!
At the end of all these classes there were championships for all, culminating in the Grand Supreme Ridden Championships for all the champions and reserves.First up was the Saddlebred European Ridden Championships. Having a fantastic show, Lucy Abbotts travelled from Hampshire with her partbred gelding Spellbound Magical Fate and took top honours. A “Georgian Grande” (Saddlebred x Draft/Gypsy Cob) “Magic” is a Saddlebred/Shire cross and stands at 17hh – imposing as that is, Lucy was attired in her heritage class costume, so really stood out as they were put through their paces by the judge.

In the Saddlebred European Ridden Championships, top honours were taken by Lucy Abbotts with her partbred gelding Spellbound Magical Fate.
Next up the Morgan Ridden Championship, a hotly contested championship with an array of Morgans trotting their way to catch the judge’s eye. Totally dominating the ring, and foot perfect, was the wonderful mare Versace, owned and shown by Angela Conner-Bulmer. Paso Finos were next in and they too strutted their stuff around the ring – corto and largo this time though, not trotting. Hannah Nurse and her mare Athenia were the proud bearers of their silk garlands as they took this championship.
The World Breeds was the last championship to go before the Supreme and every type of horse was in the ring making their last attempt to get through to the Supreme. As with all our championships, they are judged from scratch, as if they were a new class, so they are anyone’s game – if your horse is up and showing their sock’s off, well – you are in with a good chance. Who to pick though, that was the judge’s dilemma. Eventually the cards were in and the Morgan Horse Landside Music Lord for Tim Northcott was pulled in as champion. Like Lucy and her Saddlebred “Magic”, “Lordy” also had won an in hand and a ridden championship today.
So, back in the ring one last time. Goodie Bags, Rugs and blanket garlands to compete for – the Supreme Championship was on. First way round at trot, some horses were looking stunning, then the pressure seemed to get to them when walk was called for (canter comes after the walk and a lot of the horses know this). Back to the drawing board for the judge. And so the class progressed – trot, walk and canter on the left rein and a repeat on the right. Into line up and walking the line (conformation is taken into consideration even in the ridden championships, although obviously the emphasis is on performance).
Pulled in first and crowned Supreme Ridden Champion was the charismatic mare Versace owned and shown by Angela Conner-Bulmer. Foot perfect this mare had just oozed quality throughout the class. Next up, in Reserve spot was last year’s winner, another Morgan, CBMF Tipping Point with owner Natasha Rodley on board. Finally, in Second Reserve spot was the Friesian Tsjebe ‘Fan ‘E ‘Esta Hoeve for Julia Catling.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors and donations for the 2014 event: Lucy Abbott, Appledore Stud, Alexander Burnfield, Lottie Crocker Tack Shop, Elegant Equine Designs, Excell Training, KC Saddlebreds, Lynn Herd, Love Horses, Hannah Nurse, P&S Enterprises, Pat Pomp, Perryfields Stud, Lois Rose Fine Art & Photography, Julia Sayer, Tudor Morgans, Sally Willink and Scatts Country Store. In addition to thank everyone that helps at the show, in whatever capacity, before, during and after and to our judges and of course all our competitors who came along from all corners of the UK and made it such a great event.
